Sustainable Development Goals
- The Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity .
- These seventeen goals build on the successes achieved in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (2000-2015 ), and also include new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, promoting innovation, sustainable consumption, peace, and justice, among other priorities .
- Goals are interconnected - often the key to success in achieving a particular goal lies in addressing issues that are closely related to other goals .
- The Sustainable Development Goals require working in a spirit of partnership and in a practical way so that we can make the right choices today to improve life, in a sustainable way, for future generations. They provide clear guidelines and targets for all countries to adopt according to their priorities, taking into account the environmental challenges facing the entire world .
- The Sustainable Development Goals represent a comprehensive agenda. They address the root causes of poverty and unite us together to create positive change for both people and the planet .
- The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a founding member of the United Nations and has played an active role in shaping the outcomes of the Sustainable Development Goals. Over the past five decades, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has achieved remarkable progress in economic and social development. Since then, the Kingdom and the United Nations Development Programme have built a strategic partnership for development .
- In 2018, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia presented its first National Voluntary Review at the High-Level Political Forum held from 9 to 18 July 2018 at United Nations Headquarters in New York (attached). More than 1,000 governments, delegations, businesses, and civil society leaders attended to discuss the progress made by governments towards implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. The 2018 theme was "Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies . "
- The Voluntary National Review of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, supported by the United Nations Development Programme, included a comprehensive review of the status of the Sustainable Development Goals, their alignment with Saudi Vision 2030, and the actions taken by national entities, including the government, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations, to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
