Sustainable Development Goals
  1. The Sustainable Development Goals, known as the Global Goals, are an international call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
  2. Those 17 Goals are identified based on the successes attained in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (2000 - 2015). In addition, the SDGs target new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, fostering innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and justice, among other priorities.
  3. The SDGs are interconnected. The key of success of any goal often lies in addressing issues that are closely linked to other goals.
  4. To achieve the SDGs, we must work together and act practically to sustainably improve the lives of future generations. Taking into account the environmental challenges faced by the entire world, they provide clear guidelines and targets for all countries to adopt according to their priorities.
  5. SDGs are a comprehensive blueprint. They address the root causes of poverty and unite us to make a positive change for both people and the planet.
  6. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a founding member of the United Nations and has played an active role in shaping the outcomes of the Sustainable Development Goals. Over the past five decades, Saudi Arabia has made remarkable progress on the path of economic and social development. Since then, Saudi Arabia and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have established a strategic partnership of development.
  7. In 2018, Saudi Arabia presented the first national voluntary review at the High-Level Political Forum held between 09 and 18 July 2018 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York (Attachment). More than 1,000 governments, delegations, businesses and civil society leaders came together to discuss the progress governments have made towards the implementation of SDGs. The theme of 2018 was “Transformation Towards Sustainable and Resilient Societies”.
  8.  The Voluntary National Review (VNR) of Saudi Arabia, supported by UNDP, included a comprehensive review of the status of the SDGs, their alignment with Saudi Vision 2030, and actions taken by the national entities including government, private sector and NGOs to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
